Man United have confirmed that they have struck an agreement with Ajax for the signing of Lisandro Martinez, pending a medical and contract signing.
The Red Devils are yet to announce the shirt number that he will wear this season.
United have a number of number options to offer the Argentine centre-back. Here we look at some of them.
This was vacated after Andreas Pereira’s departure. Considering that Nemanja Vidic wore this, giving it to a ‘butcher’ like Martinez can be ideal.
Lee Grant’s exit made the no.13 shirt available for any player. Martinez can take inspiration from the likes of Gary Neville, David May and Phill Neville (who all wore it) to take this number.
This was Paul Pogba’s number before he left United. But before him, the great Jaap Stam wore this at United, which is why it can be a nice fit for Lisandro.
Martinez wore the no.21 shirt during his spell at Ajax and enjoyed decent success with it. The number is open to take after Edinson Cavani’s departure, meaning the defender can take it up.
The no.24 shirt has been vacant since Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s exit in 2021, but Martinez can assume it as his own at Old Trafford.
Now, while the no.4 is currently taken up by Phil Jones, he could be sold by United in the summer. Even if that doesn’t happen, the Red Devils can just ask the center-back to take a new number and give the no. 4 jersey – a famous one for center-backs – to the Argentine defender.
