It’s official – Chelsea will play Palmeiras in the FIFA Club World Cup final on February 12.
Palmeiras are a Brazilian team based in Sao Paulo. They won the 2021 Copa Libertadores to earn the right to represent South America in the tournament.
While they are a good team, Palmeiras’ squad is certainly not close to the best in the world. In fact, a quick look at their team’s estimated transfer value tells the story of the gap between Chelsea and the Brazilian team (via Transfermarkt):
Palmeiras’ Squad Value
Total squad value: €180.10m
Highest-valued player: Danilo, €18m
Combined value of top-three players: €49m
Chelsea’s Squad Value
Total squad value: €883.00m
Highest-valued player: Romelu Lukaku, €100m
Combined value of top-three players: €245m
As you can see, Chelsea’s top 3 valued players (Lukaku, Kai Havertz, and Mason Mount) will cost more in the market than Palmeiras’ entire squad!
In football, as we know, squad value doesn’t really matter in a knockout game. However, Chelsea will go into this match as heavy favorites and hopefully, an upset isn’t on the cards.
