Speaking to Tuttomercato, Thibaut Courtois said: “It is impossible for a goalkeeper to win the Ballon d’Or, even more so if he plays in a team with Karim Benzema.
“I can go far, but it is difficult to win this trophy. For me, what matters is the fact that when I returned to the locker room, all my teammates were screaming my name.
“This is worth more than personal recognition. I needed to win a final for my career, for all the hard work, to put some respect on my name.”
Legendary soviet shot-stopper Lev Yashin remains the only goalkeeper to win the Ballon d’Or (in 1963) while Bayern Munich and Germany man Manuel Neuer came third in 2014.
Benzema is widely believed to be the favorite to claim the prestigious honor this year after playing a key role in Real Madrid’s La Liga and Champions League-winning campaigns.
