A statement from the Portuguese Football Federation reads: “Cristiano Ronaldo was released from the National Team this Thursday.
“The yellow card seen against Ireland, being the second in this stage of qualification, forces them to fulfill an official game of suspension, which will happen against Azerbaijan.
“This morning, the captain of the National Team was part of the group of players who carried out recovery work at the hotel.
“Fernando Santos also directed, in the morning, a training session on a lawn next to the hotel used by the National Team during their stay in the Algarve.”
The Portugal skipper was expected to play Portugal’s upcoming clash vs Qatar followed by the World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan. CR7 became the top goalscorer in international football history after his brace in the 2-1 win over Ireland.
However, he will instead return to Manchester United ahead of his much-awaited second debut for the club when we face Newcastle on September 11.
