Rio Ferdinand has given his verdict over who should be Man United captain, saying on the Vibe with Five podcast: “The thing you can counter that [Maguire criticism] with is that there weren’t many captains at the club – who else are they going to pick?
“David de Gea would have been my choice because of the time he’s been there and he knows what it takes to win.
“This is all with hindsight but you have to got to think about these times that might come with someone like Harry Maguire, new at the club in that sense. And that added pressure is weighing on him heavily at the moment.”
There has been a lot of debate over Maguire’s captaincy since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure, with many fans believing that Bruno Fernandes or Cristiano Ronaldo can be a much better candidate for the armband.
De Gea is currently the longest-serving active player at the club and has arguably been United’s best player this season, bailing them out of trouble consistently with his world-class goalkeeping skills.
