“Two and a half weeks ago, we [with Joan Laporta] had a conversation about a new contract. Nothing was leaked to the press – until the president had a session with journalists last Tuesday about the club’s situation, financial aspects, and such,” Ronald Koeman has told AD.
“In the end, suddenly, there was talk about a [new] contract. A day later, newspapers declared: ‘Koeman can get a new contract under 3 conditions.’ So I said: ‘This is not possible’. I need to be able to control ‘how’ we play and ‘who’ I line up.
“Then the president made an appearance on Monday with that TV interview – and that was good.”
“Last Monday, he said on a TV show that there is confidence in me. That is good. Before that, there were two moments when things had come out [in the press] that didn’t indicate support for the coach – this bothered me.”
According to reports from Diario Sport, among the club’s three conditions for the renewal of Koeman’s deal was Samuel Umtiti and Riqui Puig getting more playing time. It’s said that it was a request from the Barcelona president.
