Manchester United Told To ‘Announce Lionel Messi’ By A Former Star Striker

Manchester United have been told to ramp up their interest in Lionel Messi after his contract problems with Barcelona could not be resolved. The Argentine was reportedly asked to take several pay cuts before the weight of La Liga’s financial regulations finally rendered his contract renewal unworkable for the cash-strapped Catalans.

Barcelona have only managed to sell fringe players, which has left them under a mountain of debt with little time to work with.

As a result, Messi’s new contract, along with the formal announcement of several new signings, had been put on hold until things had been worked out behind the scenes.

But La Liga eventually refused to green light Messi’s new deal due to Barca’s financial predicament.

The shocking development leaves the 34-year-old available for free, with a number of top clubs reportedly on high alert and ‘PSG thought to have won the race to sign the Argentine.’

Naturally, only a small handful of sides in world football have the necessary backing to put a tempting wage package on the table for Lionel Messi, although United are one of them.

After wishing their former striker Robin van Persie happy birthday via Instagram, the Dutchman responded by saying “Announce Messi please”.

The Argentine was almost certainly not in their transfer plans at the start of the summer, but the opportunity to sign him comes along once in a blue moon.

A report from transfer insider Mohamed Bouhafsi indicates that Messi has already made his choice, and the deal to PSG could be finalized as early as possible.

It would be quite a coup for the Ligue 1 side, who narrowly missed out on yet another domestic triumph last season at the hands of Lille.

Meanwhile, manager Mauricio Pochettino could be instrumental in luring his compatriot to the Parc des Princes, potentially getting his hands on a six-time Balon d’Or winner.

For United to follow through on Van Persie’s request, it seems as though they will have to act fast, if it is not all but too late already!
