Pep Guardiola has not won the Champions League trophy since he left Barcelona. Following a recent defeat to Chelsea in the competition’s final, the Spanish boss has admitted his team was wasteful with their chances.
“It has been an exceptional season for us. It was a tight game. We had chances,” Pep Guardiola told BT Sport after the game.
“We were brilliant in the second half, we were brave and we could not convert the chances as they were so strong. The players were exceptional. We come back maybe one day again!”
Guardiola decided against starting with a defensive midfielder in either Fernandinho or Rodri and has been criticized for his decision.
But the gaffer responded: “I did what I thought was the best decision.”
“[Kevin de Bruyne] got injured but that happens in this competition and in these games. We needed everyone.
“The ambition now is to rest but then prepare for the next season. It was the first time we were at this stage. Hopefully, we will be here again in the future.”
This season, Pep Guardiola have suffered three straight and painful defeats at the hands of Chelsea including having his side knocked out of the FA Cup.
The Manchester City boss has now gone a decade without winning the Champions League. And it was his first final appearance in 10 years.
