Barcelona were humiliated at home by German machines Bayern Munich in the opening Champions League game of the 2021-22 campaign.
Here is how our players performed; Note: Ratings are out of 10.
Gerard Pique — 7.5
Perhaps risking Pique’s health was worth it because who knows what the score would’ve been if not for his solid performance.
Bayern Munich’s forwards were clearly faster than the Catalan, but he managed to stand his ground thanks to his positioning and reading of the game. Pique’s passing was on point as well.
Ronald Araujo — 7.5
The Uruguayan looked quite solid as well, and his speed might have saved Barcelona from conceding a couple more.
Although Robert Lewandowski scored twice, he was silent had been silent throughout the match in big part thanks to Ronald. Araujo didn’t crumble under the pressure but he still needs to work on his positioning.
Jordi Alba — 5
Senseless crosses that rarely reached his teammates and a weak performance defensively. Maybe Ronald Koeman should’ve started Alex Balde in the first place, especially considering that Alba is fresh off of an injury.
Luuk de Jong — 5
It’s hard to find a single positive thing that Luuk added to Barca’s game against Bayern.
He isn’t a player designed to play counter-attacking football, that’s for sure, but he wasn’t even particularly good at winning the ball in the air and sending it to his teammates.
Eric Garcia — 4
The deflection might’ve been an unlucky one, but Garcia had an awful outing even besides that. He got constantly outplayed on the left side, either failing to read the situation rightly or simply getting outspeed by the rivals. He has Pique and Araujo to thank for not getting a worse rating.
Other Players: Ter Stegen — 6.5, Roberto — 4.5, Pedri — 6.5, Busquets — 5.5, F. de Jong — 7, Memphis — 7, Gavi — 6.5, Coutinho — 6, Demir — 6, Mingueza — 5.5, Balde — 6.5.
