New interim Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick said that Chelsea had contacted him for the spot of interim manager back in February when Thomas Tuchel had just taken over the role.
Asked to respond to these comments, Tuchel said: “Maybe after our draw against Wolverhampton [he was contacted by Chelsea]!
“Maybe the bosses saw the draw and said ‘he does not know what he’s doing, let’s bring Ralf in for four months!’ He must have the date wrong, hopefully!”
“Otherwise, well, you know it’s a nice job to have in world football – to be the coach of Chelsea. You need to be realistic. If you get the phone call you should be aware you are not the only one getting a phone call. Now I am here, I am happy.”
It does sound unrealistic for Chelsea to be contacting Rangnick a couple of weeks into Tuchel’s tenure! Well, in hindsight, selecting Tuchel was the correct call from Chelsea as the Blues ended up winning the Champions League title last season.
