FC Porto defender Nanu has sustained a traumatic brain injury after he was caught between two opponents in an aerial battle. During the Primeira Liga clash between Porto and Belenenses SAD on Thursday night, a horrible challenge that led a player to be sent to the hospital occurred.
In the 85th minute of the match, Porto was eager to secure the winning goal, when Jesus Corona crossed the ball into the box as Nanu entered the box to challenge it. However, goalkeeper Kritsyuk and FC Porto defender Nanu collided in the air and the right-back fell unconscious to the ground.
Following the incident, the players on both sides immediately called for the medical staff to enter the pitch. Both sides also anxiously asked the ambulance to enter right away. At that point, it became obvious that Nanu’s injury was very serious as Pepe and Marega were seen crying on the pitch.
The Porto defender Nanu received oxygen right away and was assisted for 10 minutes before exiting the field on an ambulance. As per Portuguese newspaper Record, Nanu arrived at the hospital with full conscience and has been taken to perform further examination. Moreover, the 26-year-old player sustained a traumatic brain injury but he is in a stable condition now.
Meanwhile, Porto manager Sergio Conceicao can be seen on the pitch yelling at the match referee despite the horrible challenge and clear concerns coming from both teams. The Portuguese manager and some Porto players were visibly annoyed at the referee probably for his decision following the incident. However, after much review from VAR, Porto was awarded a corner instead of a penalty.
Both teams left with the share of a point, which leaves the defending champions Porto further behind Sporting in the race to retain their title.
Our hearts and thoughts are with Nanu as we wish him a speedy recovery after this unfortunate incident!
